TheCenter http://www.tridelta.org/thecenter en-us Mon, 15 Jul 2013 04:34:44 -0500 Delta Delta Delta Members Embark On “Journey in Leadership” http://www.tridelta.org/thecenter/evergreen2013pr Sorority sisters experience leadership excursion in Costa Rica

Arlington, TX - April 12, 2013

Eighteen Delta Delta Delta Fraternity members traveled to Costa Rica March 9-15 to experience Evergreen®, a journey in leadership, sponsored by the Fraternity. Evergreen is a values-based, alternative spring break program that combines the allure of travel with self-examination and personal development. Participants discover the social, historical and geographic contours of Costa Rica while exploring the landscapes of their own hearts and minds.

This year's program was led by Michael Greenberg, owner of Journey 360®. Three participants from last year's trip, Hannah Olsen, Loyola Marymount, Haley Cowan, Oklahoma, and Danielle LaCoste, Baylor, all attended this year as program interns and assisted with program facilitation. Also attending the trip were: Cari Cook, Fraternity Executive Director; Alison Griffin, Fraternity Executive Board Member; Sarah Williamson, Director of Educational Initiatives; and Natalie Trlicek, Chapter Resources Coordinator.

Evergreen 2013 intern Hannah Olsen reflects on her experience, "For me, Evergreen brought about a renewed zest for life and appreciation for the little things. I am so grateful for the friendships forged and the lessons learned on the trip. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to go back to the place where I had such a wonderful experience."

This year, participants were selected in November after an application process that involved essays and questions about their leadership experiences. The 18 women selected represent Tri Delta chapters from across the country.

"As a member of the Executive Board, the ability to have the Evergreen experience with a select group of college women was educational, eye-opening and inspiring," says Alison Griffin. "The time together with our collegiate members gave me the opportunity to learn about the challenges and demands of college life and make a personal connection with some of Tri Delta's finest aspiring leaders."

Sarah Williamson says, "Each moment of the trip provided an amazing correlation to the Tri Delta membership experience and to each individual person's growth and development as a leader. There was so much to see and to appreciate. It's valuable for Tri Delta members, and I would recommend any member to consider attending Evergreen; it offers the break you need from your daily life and a chance to get away with sisters and share an experience that will impact who you are for a lifetime."

Participant Sara Hoffman, Washington State, summarizes the valuable lessons she learned from Evergreen: "Since returning to the U.S., I have seen myself take strides in my personal growth. Evergreen made me more aware of my weaknesses, what I can do to work on them, and has given me tools to become a better communicator and leader — skills that will last a lifetime."

In addition to their leadership training, members also had unique opportunities for adventure, including zip-lining through the rainforest and white water rafting. Tri Delta was especially excited to return to a school in Sona Fluca and help build an addition that will house a library and recreational center as a way to give back to the community.

In honor of Tri Delta, Journey 360 and Affinity Consultants gave a monetary gift to the Sona Fluca school that will help build a new library.

"... this group definitely helped to find new ideas as well as find ways to rework old ideas!"
- Maya, New Member Educator, Ottawa

"This group has really helped me connect with other VP/Ms across North America and gave me really great ideas to do with my own chapter that I never would have thought of before. I definitely suggest this group for next year!"
-Katie, VP/Membership, Valparaiso

"I was slated into Academic Development Chairmen at the beginning of this fall semester due to some unexpected transitioning so I have had less time to use this group than the other Academic Development Chairmen. Having this group, though, as a quick and easy communication platform has been reassuring. If I ever have a question, I have easy access to not just 55+ Academic Chairs, but The Center, too!"

The Center Staff Prepares for CLC 2013 http://www.tridelta.org/thecenter/centerstaffpreparesforclc CLC 2013 in Dallas, TX. This year's theme is a "Celebration of Leaders" and we are thrilled to take this opportunity to support chapter officers, offer education and share the best possible tools for our chapter's leadership as they prepare for their terms. The Center is eager to also share many updates and revisions in Tri Delta operations that we hope will continue to propel Tri Delta forward as an innovative, relevant organization.

The Collegiate Leadership Conference, CLC (formally known as the Regional Leadership Conference, RLC) is a time for officers to learn, grow, gain ideas from others and acquire the tools needed to create changes in their collegiate chapters. The Center Staff often finds ourselves wishing chapters could send every collegiate officer as we believe every leadership role can benefit from this type of leadership experience. However, with limited space, we were very intentional in the selection of this year's participants and are excited to meet the following officers from all 138 of Tri Delta's collegiate chapters:

 • Collegiate Chapter President
 • Vice President of Chapter Development
 • New Member Educator
 • Vice President of Public Relations
 • Alumna Advisor
Officers will have ample opportunities to share best practices with one another and to learn from chapters of all different backgrounds. We will also offer education about the updated Fraternity Policies, Procedures and Forms, updated programs, workshops and empowering speakers.

This one-of-a-kind experience is one that Tri Delta believes is a necessary part of chapter growth. Jackie Carter, Towson, speaks of her experience from RLC, 2011.

".. RLC was a pretty awesome experience and I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to attend. I loved meeting and brainstorming with other women in my position! I've learned so much about the diversity of sisterhood by meeting women from all over the country. Knowing that Tri Delta doesn't fit any 'cookie-cutter' mold makes me love the Fraternity even more."- Jackie Carter, Towson

We look forward to seeing you in February!

Academic Excellence Updates http://www.tridelta.org/thecenter/news091012 Over the past several months, the Executive Board and Executive Office staff have been working to update the Fraternity Policies, Procedures & Forms. Among many clarifications, additions and changes was that of our academic policy which further empowered chapters to create and implement their own plans for promoting and achieving academic excellence among its members.

Then at Convention 2012, Academic Excellence Chairman from collegiate chapters across North America came together and dove deep into academic resources, incentives, policies, programs and workshops. One concept learned at Convention was that of our MPR Model.

Not every collegiate member will share the same academic goals nor will they all feel the same about how their individual grades are relevant to Tri Delta. However, part of being a Tri Delta means adhering to the outlined academic requirements.

Implementing academic excellence in Tri Delta may sometimes mean offering incentives or rewards to get members motivated and more excited about putting in the extra effort toward academics. It means providing resources for those who need them and it also means acknowledging members for their own personal efforts and successes.

Tri Delta encourages the use of the following MPR model. When the chapter motivates members with incentives and benefits to achieve Academic Excellence, provides members the resources needed to assist them in this process and then recognizes any individual academic achievement, the cycle is predicted to repeat itself, ultimately due to the opportunity for recognition.

The MPR model allows chapters to be proactive about the programs they provide to their membership, thus setting a precedent for making academics a priority. If implemented effectively, in a way that is purposeful for the members, chapters will see this affect the academic success of the chapter. If chapters are proactive about this purposeful implementation, they will have to be less reactive regarding members that do not meet the chapter's academic requirements.

Look at one way we found Elon University recognizing its members for academic success! This is just one great example and we are anxious to know how your chapter has been encouraging academic excellence!

For more ideas in utilizing the MPR Model, check out the Academic Excellence Initiative found on Delta's Only.]]>

Fat Talk Free Week http://www.tridelta.org/thecenter/fattalkfreeweek In 2008, Tri Delta launched Fat Talk Free® Week. Fat Talk Free® Week is an international, 5-day body activism campaign designed to raise awareness to body image issues and the damaging impact of the "thin ideal" on women in society. Fat Talk describes all of the statements made in everyday conversation that can contribute to women's dissatisfaction with their bodies by reinforcing the thin ideal standard of beauty. This annual public awareness effort was born from Tri Delta's award-winning body image education and eating disorders prevention program, Reflections.

Fat Talk Free Week, our cause campaign in support of Reflections, is an annual week-long event to raise awareness about the damaging effects of Fat Talk. We're encouraging everyone to change the conversation to create a more positive body image for women everywhere!

In 2012, Tri Delta will recognize the fat talk free messaging throughout the entire month of October and looks forward to the launch of our new extended initiative that not only incorporates Fat Talk Free Week but further develops body image awareness efforts in a more holistic effort as well. For groups, individuals or organizations interested in continuing to share the fat talk free messaging, Tri Delta hopes they will join our efforts throughout the month of October. For those looking to celebrate a Fat Talk Free Week in a more structured way, Tri Delta encourages these efforts to take place during the 3rd week of the month or October 22-26, 2012.

Campaigns for Collegiate Housing http://www.tridelta.org/thecenter/campaigns How Tri Delta is working to address housing concerns and assist alumnae groups in fundraising efforts for collegiate living environments.

content-dotted-line.png

Virginia House 1.JPGFraternity and sorority house corporations own and/or maintain over 8,000 facilities at colleges and universities and serve as the largest student landlord in the country. But the growing enrollments, combined with the rising costs to provide safe, secure and comfortable living environments for our collegiate members has left many alumni groups struggling to meet demand. For this reason, Delta Delta Delta Fraternity established The Center for Living, Learning & Leading's campaign services team.

The Center provides a wide array of services to assist local house corporations with their alumane development and fundraising needs. Trained staff and consultants collaborate with local alumnae to provide support for donation managment, alumnae publications, and capital campaign strategy and implementation. In addition, The Center's recognition as a qualified 501c3 organization enables alumnae to make tax deductible donations toward educational space in local chapter houses.*

* Local house corporations must enter into an Educational Area Grant Agreement with The Center that meets guidelines set by the Internal Revenue Service before The Center may process tax deductible donations on the chapters' behalf.

The Center education team works collaboratively with our chapters to create a curriculum that strategically meets the specific needs and goals of the members. Then, a trained facilitator is sent to the chapter and leads the program. The retreat can vary in length and topic.

Chapter Retreat Testimonial

Kristen Tekell, Baylor:

The Center was more than willing to cater the entire experience toward our chapter's needs and vision. All of our officers left the retreat with a renewed perspective and purpose that we are now ready to spread throughout our chapter.

The retreat was INCREDIBLE!! The experience was an awesome opportunity for us to grow and learn from each other and, helped us reevaluate where we are and where we're headed.

I couldn't recommend a better experience for you and your officers or members!!

Webinar Testimonial

After participating in the webinar, I learned that furthering your career is an ongoing process. I can't expect to be ready for the workforce by sitting down and trying to do everything in one day. By giving up one hour of my busy college schedule to participate in the webinar, I learned valuable tips that will stay with me forever. In a day and age where having a successful career is so competitive, it is important to make an ongoing effort to further your career. It is all of the extra steps that will set you apart from other candidates." - Allison Lackey, Millikin
