Steps for Starting a Tri Delta Chapter

The process for starting a new Tri Delta chapter is called extension.  There are three ways for the extension process to begin:

1.  The college or university has officially opened for extension by way of an affirmative vote from the Panhellenic council or approval from college/university administrators.

2.   A local organization is interested in becoming affiliated with Delta Delta Delta

3.   A closed Tri Delta chapter is being recolonized

Please note that all three ways of starting a new chapter must be coordinated with the assistance of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC).  Please visit the NPC Extension Web site for further information.

You should also visit your office of student life or activities to discuss your interest in extension with the fraternity/sorority life advisors.  The advisors who work in these areas can help guide you in working with the campus Panhellenic Council and the NPC.

1.  The college or university has officially opened for extension by way of an affirmative vote from the campus Panhellenic council or approval from college/university administrators.

    • Tri Delta then gathers more information about the sorority community
    • If Tri Delta decides to pursue the opportunity, we send an application packet to the campus extension committee to officially express interest.
    • After all submitted informational packets are evaluated, the campus will typically invite three organizations to campus to make a presentation to the campus extension committee.
    • After all presentations are made, the campus will evaluate all the organizations interested in the opportunity and will offer the opportunity for colonization to a certain group.
    • If Tri Delta is chosen by the students and administrators, we begin the colonization process

2.  A local organization is interested in becoming affiliated with Delta Delta Delta

    • A local sorority or interest group can petition their campus Panhellenic or campus administration in order to gain affiliation with an inter/national women’s fraternity.
    • The campus Panhellenic Council must vote in favor of extension in order for local or interest group to seek inter/national affiliation.
    • After an affirmative vote, the local organization may then petition the NPC women’s fraternity of its choice or may open the opportunity to all NPC organizations.
    • If a local group is only interested in Tri Delta affiliation, we are given official notice by NPC.
    • Once Tri Delta learns more about the local or interest group, Tri Delta votes to either decline the opportunity or begin colonization.

3.  A closed Tri Delta chapter is being recolonized

    • The same process as explained in the first situation also applies for recolonization of a closed Tri Delta chapter.
    • The campus must be open for extension, Tri Delta’s Extension Committee must be interested in returning to the campus at that time, and Tri Delta must be selected by the campus Panhellenic for recolonization.
