It has been 12 days
since an EF4 tornado tore through the southern United States, leveling homes
and businesses and leaving communities like Tuscaloosa, Ala., devastated. As
the country watched the news stunned, those immediately affected, such as the
fraternity and sorority community of the University of Alabama, went to work.
Using Twitter and Facebook as communication pipelines, the students began to pool food, volunteers and resources at one of the remaining chapter houses with electricity. From there, they were able to begin providing hot meals to first-responders and survivors of the storm.
As of Friday May 5, over 52,000 hot meals were prepared and served by the students, including members of the Delta Mu chapter of Delta Delta Delta. (MSNBC interviewed Meg McCrummen, Sarah Ida Shaw Honorable Mention Recipient ).
The kitchen officially closed with the end of the semester, but the work rebuilding the Tuscaloosa community is far from over. The UA Greek Relief is now focused on donations, directly supporting the relief effort. For more information about UA Greek Relief, visit their website. Donations to the fund are being accepted online.
