What are the costs and deadlines?
The total cost of Evergreen Costa Rica is $3,800. Some needs based scholarship funds are available. Please contact The Center for Living, Learning & Leading for more information.
Evergreen Costa Rica deadlines:
October 15, 2013: Application deadline
October 25, 2013: Participants are notified that they have been selected. Once participants confirm that they will attend, they will receive a complete registration packet with thorough trip details.
November 15, 2013: A $500 non-refundable deposit and first payment of $500, totaling $1000 is due
January 3, 2014: Final payment of $2,800 due.
Who attends Evergreen?Any collegiate member may apply for Evergreen Costa Rica. Individual leadership development is the primary goal of Evergreen and we are looking for participants who are eager to broaden their leadership skills and willing to fully immerse themselves into the culture and learning opportunities presented. There are no prerequisites to apply and we will select participants from various schools, classifications and levels of leadership experience.
There is limited availability for Evergreen and applications will go through a selection process. Our selection committee will select 24 participants for Evergreen.
Collegiate participants are accompanied by Tri Delta Executive Office staff and volunteers. They will be a part of all activities and excursions and stay at the same hotels and/or campsites as participants. Participants will receive contact information for these individuals prior to the trip.
What are the participant's expectations?
All selected participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver for the trip, participate in both preparation phone calls and follow up phone calls, video interviews throughout the trip and assistance in marketing future trips. Thorough expectations and participants guidelines are provides within a registration packet.
What types of leadership development will take place?
Evergreen participants are immediately challenged to step out of their comfort zones and be open to the many leadership lessons of the unique Evergreen curriculum. Through videos, group discussion, small group break outs, personal reflection, journaling opportunities and the specific trip activities, participants learn a great deal about themselves as a leader. They will explore the unique skills they currently possess, think about what they would like to improve upon and explore ways to apply their skills to their lives. Participants will explore social styles and learn about their individual qualities as leaders. They will learn lessons in healthy communication, understanding the differences that we have with others, skills in leading others and team work- all in a unique environment among sisters.
What types of activities take place?
Participants spend time daily in a conference center preparing for the leadership lessons of the day. Various conversations take place among the group as it relates to the overall experience. Additionally, the group will go on daily excursions which are applicable to the lessons they are learning. Excursions include:
- Monteverde Cloud Forest- Participants hike through a forest at an altitude so high that that you are walking through the clouds.
- Butterfly Garden- Learn about the "bug" life of Costa Rica and tour a butterfly garden
- Costa Rican family farm- Visit the home of a past Costa Rica president and learn to cook authentic Costa Rican food
- Arenal volcanic excursion- Hike through a rain forest and climb the Arenal volcano, Costa Rica's most active volcano.
- Tabacon hot springs- Visit natural hot springs
- Waterfall hike- This hike is a personal challenge down 500 stairs to the base of a beautiful waterfall
- White water rafting- Participants raft down the Balsa River
- Zip-line- fly through the trees on this unique zip line experience
How are participants selected?
Tri Delta and The Center for Living, Learning & Leading will have a selection committee comprised of staff members, The Center Board members and past Evergreen participants. They will be responsible for reviewing applications and selecting participants for Evergreen.
What are the accommodations?
Participants will stay at two different hotels. Hotel information is provided to participation upon registration. Participants will share rooms with other collegiate participants. Internet access is not always reliable and participants should not expect to have regular online access.
What if Evergreen conflicts with my class schedule?
Participants should prepare to make arrangements to miss any class that will take place during Evergreen®. Participants are provided with a letter that they may give to professors explaining the nature of the trip. Tri Delta cannot guarantee excusal and participants are responsible for working with their professors individually. Participants should not anticipate much free time to do school work or online course work during the trip.
