In Memoriam – February 2024

March 11, 2024
Sisterhood

Each month, Tri Delta publishes In Memoriam, highlighting the lives of some of our Distinguished Deltas and longtime volunteers and sharing a full list of sisters who have recently passed away. Below is the In Memoriam for February 2024.

Carrie Belle Morris Herd, Tennessee

Tri Delta was saddened to hear of the passing of Carrie Belle Morris Herd, Tennessee, on Feb. 27, 2024. While attending college during WWII, Carrie Belle learned to fly airplanes for the Civil Air Patrol when they were testing whether women would be able to fly planes using instruments only (IFR). Incidentally, she earned her wings flying IFR! As a collegian at UT, Carrie Belle flew solo missions between Knoxville and Oak Ridge. On these missions, she was tasked to keep an eye out for German aircraft as, unbeknownst to her, Oak Ridge was home to facilities working on the atomic bomb.

Following graduate school and her marriage to Charles, Carrie Belle taught physical education at the University of Tennessee. Later in life, Carrie Belle could always be counted on to give a lesson to her children or neighborhood kids on the rules and skills required for just about any sport, from volleyball to archery to canoeing to square dancing. Carrie Belle taught hundreds—if not thousands—of people to swim. She was the first woman on the board of directors for the Knoxville Red Cross, and she played tennis well into her 80s.

In 2020, at the age of 95, Carrie Belle was interviewed by NPR’s Story Corps about her time in the Civil Air Patrol. Listen to her reflection on what she experienced and the three-word phrase that drove her to keep going.
