Thank you for your engagement and interest in the reestablishment of the Theta Pi Chapter. As you may be aware, over the past five months Tri Delta has been considering an opportunity to return to the UCLA campus. We have heard from many Theta Pi sisters and appreciate the passionate and thoughtful conversations we have had as we seek to determine if this is the right time for us to move forward.
On March 16, more than 340 members of the Theta Pi House Corporation met for a special meeting to consider adopting amended and restated House Corporation Bylaws that would shift the Theta Pi House Corporation voting membership and management to Tri Delta Housing. We are proud of the robust engagement from interested alumnae, and you should all be proud of the number of sisters who showed up for that special meeting. For those not in attendance, the House Corporation members voted 157-189 to reject the change. The close nature of the vote revealed very different views about the best path forward.
Tri Delta’s leaders have the obligation to steward Tri Delta’s brand, values and resources to ensure future members have the best possible Tri Delta experience. After careful consideration, and despite the good faith efforts of so many to make it possible, we’ve concluded that we simply don’t have the conditions necessary for the Theta Pi Chapter to return successfully to UCLA at this time. As a result, Tri Delta will not move forward with efforts to rejoin the Panhellenic community at UCLA.
Over the past 25 years, Tri Delta has established 32 collegiate chapters and has extensive experience both opening new and reestablishing previously closed chapters. Through this process, we have welcomed tens of thousands of new members into our sisterhood and built or renovated hundreds of thousands of square feet of residential living space. From this extensive experience, we have learned that to compete and thrive in a campus community such as UCLA, we must have the right conditions in the campus Panhellenic community, strong support from local volunteers and alumnae, and, when required, a living facility that positions the chapter to be competitive against not only the Greek community but the broader student housing market. These conditions are even more important for chapter reestablishments.
Not returning Theta Pi to UCLA in Fall 2027 is a disappointing and sad result for Tri Delta, Theta Pi alumnae and the potential members we were hoping to welcome into our sisterhood. We have communicated this decision to UCLA’s Panhellenic Council and Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and remain hopeful that at a future time—when the conditions are more conducive—we can return Theta Pi to UCLA and offer the Tri Delta experience to the next generation of Theta Pi women.
While chapter operations were suspended in 2017, Theta Pi’s charter was not withdrawn at that time as it was expected the chapter would be reestablished quickly. Now, with no clear path to reestablishment in the near future, Tri Delta has moved to formally make the Theta Pi Chapter inactive. In accordance with the House Corporation’s Bylaws and the Fraternity’s Bylaws, the inactivation of the chapter means the House Corporation’s assets, including the chapter house, will need to transfer to Tri Delta Housing. Conversations have begun with the Theta Pi House Corporation to determine next steps for the chapter home.
Our Theta Pi alumnae are an enduring and cherished part of Tri Delta. We are deeply grateful for the generations of sisters who have shaped this chapter, and we are committed to honoring those relationships and staying meaningfully connected in the years ahead.
